7 भारतीय चिंतन में स्वास्थ्य का अर्थ ‘स्व’ में स्थित होता है। दूसरे शब्दों में एक आत्मस्थ व्यक्ति को स्वस्थ कहा जा सकता है। जीवन का आनंद लेने के लिए स्वस्थ रहने की आवश्यकता है। स्वास्थ्य व्यक्ति के व्यक्तिगत एवं सामाजिक जीवन के लिए महत्त्वपूर्ण है। समाज का एक उत्पादक सदस्य होने के नाते हमें जागरूक और शरीर से क्रियाशील होने की आवश्यकता है। स्वास्थ्य मनोविज्ञान में वे मनोवैज्ञानिक कारक आते हैं जो स्वास्थ्य को बनाए रखने और उन्नत करने में सहायक होते हैं। यह उन कारकों की भी खोज करता है जो रोग की स्थिति पैदा करते हैं। हमारी जीवन शैली और सोचने एवं व्यवहार करने के तरीके लोगों के स्वास्थ्य स्तर में योगदान करते हैं। व्यायाम, पौष्टिक भोजन लेने और धूम्रपान जैसे दुर्व्यसनों में परिवर्तन से शरीर को स्वस्थ रखा जा सकता है।
स्वास्थ्य शारीरिक और मानसिक कुशलक्षेम की अवस्था को कहते हैं। यह एक सकारात्मक अवस्था है। लोगों के व्यक्तिगत तथा सामाजिक जीवन में स्वास्थ्य का केन्द्रीय स्थान है। आज की दुनिया में लोगों के गुणात्मक जीवन को चारों ओर से चुनौतियों का सामना करना पड़ता है जिसका परिणाम लोगों का गिरता स्वास्थ्य है। एक ओर बाहरी पर्यावरण बड़ी तेजी से बदल रहा है। इससे अनेक पर्यावरणीय तनावों से सफलतापूर्वक निपटने की आवश्यकता है। सामाजिक संरचना में आए बदलाव जैसे परिवार और अन्य सामाजिक संस्थाओं का विघटन, प्रतिस्पर्धा और उपभोक्तावादी संस्कृति द्वंद्व और असहयोग को बढ़ावा प्रदान कर स्वास्थ्य पर प्रतिकूल प्रभाव डाल रही है। 1
