खंड ‘क’
- निम्नलिखित गद्यांश को पढ़कर पूछे गए प्रश्नों के लिए सही विकल्प चुनकर लिखिए : 1×5=5 उन दिनों मैं अपने छात्रों को आनुवंशिकी पढ़ाया करता था। उस समय मैं माँसपेशियों की कमजोरियों पर भी कुछ प्रयोग कर रहा था। इन प्रयोगों से ही ‘एपिजेनेटिक्स’ की विधा निकल कर आई थी। मैं मूल कोशिकाओं के प्रतिरूप तैयार करता था। ये मूल कोशिका की एकदम ठीक नकल होते थे। इन प्रतिरूपी कोशिकाओं को मैं एक-एक कर के अलग करता और इन्हें अलग-अलग वातावरण में रखता, अलग-अलग बर्तनों में।
इस संस्कार में रखी कोशिकाएँ हर 10-12 घंटे में विभाजित होती हैं, एक से दो हो जाती हैं। फिर अगले 10-12 घंटे में दो से चार, और फिर चार से आठ। इसी तरह दो हफ्ते में हजारों कोशिकाएँ तैयार होतीं। फिर मैंने तीन भिन्न वातावरण में कोशिकाओं की भिन्न बस्तियाँ तैयार कीं। इन ‘बस्तियों’ का रासायनिक वातावरण एकदम अलग- अलग था। ठीक कुछ वैसे ही जैसे हर व्यक्ति के शरीर का वातावरण अलग होता है और एक ही शरीर के भीतर भी कई तरह के वातावरण होते हैं। अलग-अलग वातावरण में भी रखी गई इन कोशिकाओं का ‘डी.एन.ए.’ तो एकदम समान था। उनका पर्यावरण, उनका वातावरण भिन्न था। जल्दी ही इस प्रयोग के नतीजे सामने आने लगे।
एक बर्तन में उन्हीं कोशिकाओं ने हड्डी का रूप ले लिया था, एक में माँसपेशी का, और तीसरे बर्तन में कोशिकाओं ने वसा या चर्बी का रूप ले लिया। यह प्रयोग इस सवाल का जवाब ढूँढ़ने के लिए किया था कि कोशिकाओं की किस्मत कैसे तय होती है। सारी कोशिकाएँ एक ही मूल से निकली थीं। तो नए सिरे से यह सिद्ध हुआ कि कोशिकाओं की आनुवंशिकी नियति तय नहीं करती है। जवाब था; परिवेश। पर्यावरण। वातावरण।
