जंगल मूल रूप से पेड़-पौधों की विभिन्न प्रजातियों से आच्छादित भूमि का एक टुकड़ा है। प्रकृति की ये ख़ूबसूरत रचनाएँ विभिन्न प्रजाति के जीव-जंतुओं के लिए घर का काम करती हैं। वन पारिस्थितिक तंत्र का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण हिस्सा हैं। दुर्भाग्य से शीतलता और हरियाली के प्रतीक माने जाने वाले ये जंगल पूरे विश्व में इन दिनों धधक रहे हैं । ऐसा नहीं है कि दावानल की घटनाएँ पहले नहीं होती थीं लेकिन वर्तमान में ये समस्या विकराल रूप में सामने आने लगी है। इसकी कुछ खास वजह हैं।
