Question 3

Answer the following questions in about 150 words.

(i) Describe the composition of export and import trade of India.

(ii) Write a note on the changing nature of the international trade of India.

Solution:

(i) The composition of India's foreign trade has significantly evolved, especially post-liberalization. Exports are now dominated by manufactured goods like engineering goods, petroleum products, chemicals, gems and jewelry, textiles, and electronics, which constitute over 80% of the export basket. India has transformed into a non-primary goods exporting nation. Services exports also play a crucial role, contributing more to global exports than manufacturing. Key export commodities include gems and jewelry, readymade garments, basic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cotton yarn, and fabrics. Imports primarily consist of petroleum products, precious stones, electronics, and machinery.

(ii) India's international trade patterns have undergone substantial changes since the early 1990s, moving from a closed, socialist-oriented economy to a more liberalized one. The total value of goods exports has increased dramatically. There's a marked shift in the export basket away from traditional sectors like textiles and agricultural commodities towards engineering goods, which now form a larger share. India has also emerged as a major global supplier of pharmaceuticals ('pharmacy of the world') and a hub for outsourced business processes and IT-intensive operations, often referred to as the 'world's back-office'. This reflects a dynamic evolution driven by economic reforms and globalization.
