1. The reason Sophie liked Geoff better than anyone

else was that he didn't talk much and tended to get lost in his own thoughts. His stillness made her envious, and she believed he had access to a secret world. She always imagined herself wearing fashionable clothing and being welcomed by everyone, since she yearned to be a part of that world. Geoff represented Sophie's freedom from the boring life they had been leading.
