- Sclera: This is the tough, opaque, fibrous outer layer that provides structural support and protection to the eyeball. The anterior part of the sclera is transparent and is called the cornea, which helps in refracting light.
- Choroid: Located beneath the sclera, the choroid is a vascular layer rich in blood vessels that supply nutrients and oxygen to the eye. It is pigmented, which helps to absorb stray light and prevent internal reflection. Towards the anterior part, the choroid thickens to form the ciliary body, which is connected to the iris. The iris is the colored part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil, regulating the amount of light entering the eye. The pupil is the opening in the center of the iris.
- Retina: This is the innermost layer and contains the light-sensitive photoreceptor cells: rods and cones. The retina also includes other neural cells like bipolar cells and ganglion cells. Rods are responsible for vision in low light conditions (scotopic vision) and detecting motion, while cones are responsible for color vision and sharp detail in bright light (photopic vision).
