Question 14: How much electricity is required in coulomb for the oxidation of (i) 1 mol of H2O to O2. (ii) 1 mol of FeO to Fe2O3.

Answer:(i) We have 1 mol of H2O
1 mol of H2O  will give one atom of O 
Charge on O = – 2
Electricity required         =n F
= 2 × 96487 Coulombs
= 192974 Coulombs
= 1.93 × 105 Coulombs

(ii)                      
Charge on Fe in compound FeO        = + 2
Charge on Fe in compound Fe2O3 = + 3
Change in charge  n = 1
Electricity required          = nF
= 96487 Coulombs
= 9.65 × 104 Coulombs
